Iolani Palace
The 'Iolani Palace is the only palace on USA soil. In 1882, King David Kalakaua decided to build this palace--meant to be a symbol to the world that Hawaiian royals were as grand as any Europeans. Only two of them ever lived here--Kalakaua, who was childless, and his sister, Queen Liliokalani, who succeeded him only to be overthrown and put under house arrest. Today, this well-preserved structure offers a window into Hawaii's majestic and tragic past.
